Technology

We hope to develop the full potential of all individual students in their study of all aspects of Technology and give them opportunities both in and out of the curriculum to make their experience interesting, informative and enjoyable.

Key Stage 3

All three years of KS3 follow a carousel in which we hope to cover all aspects of the national curriculum with a very broad spectrum of topics.

In Year 7 students have the opportunity to do some of the following: laminated acrylic paperweights, metal candle holders, wooden toy boats, metal coat hooks, picture frames, pop up cards, electronic door buzzer and textiles book cover. All Year 7 students do food, making items such as cakes, fruit salad and biscuits.

In Year 8 students have the opportunity to do the following: make a short Claymation film, acrylic wall clocks, light sensing circuit and making felt. All Year 8 students do food, making such items as quiche, soup and macaroni cheese.

In Year 9 students have the opportunity to do the following; laminated timber table lamp, basic programming, juggling balls and designing and packaging their own pen. All Year 9 students do food, making pizza, Dutch apple cake and curry.

Key Stage 4

Students have access to the following GCSE courses.

Catering (WJEC 4730)
Catering has two controlled assignments, one of which is sat in term 5 & 6 in Year 10 (20%) the other is sat in term 3 & 4 of Year 11 (40%), before a final exam is sat in the summer term of Year 11. When not doing assignments students learn about high risk products, hygiene law as well as learning how to prepare multi course meals in a set amount of time. Students are also given the opportunity to obtain their food hygiene certificate during Year 10.

Engineering (AQA 4850)
Two terms of Year 10 are spent making various projects ranging from candle holders to centre squares with the focus being on acquiring skills. In the final term of Year 10 students start their first of two controlled assessments which is based on Designing and Communicating in Engineering. In Year 11 they do their second controlled assessment, manufacturing Engineered Products. Both controlled assessments add up to 60% with the final 40% being an exam sat in the summer of Year 11.

Graphics (AQA 45501)
In Year 10 students learn a wide variety of modern and traditional skills by doing a range of projects that includes pop up cards, point of sale display, confectionary packaging and business cards. Students do a controlled assessment (60%) at the start of Year 11 which last three terms and sit an exam (40%) in the summer.

Resistant Materials (AQA 45621)
Year 10 students develop their practical and drawing skills by designing and making a variety of objects ranging from traditional boxes, small pieces of jewellery, bottle openers, tooth paste holder and three armed candelabras. Year 11 is spent focussed on their controlled assessment (60%) before sitting their exam (40%) in the summer. One group of resistant materials students are given the chance to sit their exam at the end of Year 10 rather than Year 11.

Systems and Control (AQA 45651)
Year 10 systems and control is spent learning about mechanisms, circuits and programming. This is accomplished by doing the following projects: electronic dice, a mechanical automata and an electronic point of sale display. Students do a controlled assessment (60%) at the start of Year 11 which last three terms and sit an exam (40%) in the summer. Systems and control groups are currently piloting an IT based controlled assessment as opposed to the traditional paper based route.

Textiles (AQA 45701)
Students in Year 10 cover a wide variety of textiles skills and theories ranging from recycling and fair-trade to sublimation printing and electronics in textiles. They make a variety of objects to bag up these theories as well as having to design their own objects, e.g. shoulder bags. Students do a controlled assessment (60%) at the start of Year 11 which last three terms and sit an exam (40%) in the summer.
