Introduction to the Library

‘Getting More Young People Reading, That’s What We’re All About’

The Library is a wonderful place where both students and staff can work and learn effectively as well as undertaking reading for pleasure.

Reading for pleasure

We have nearly 6,000 fiction titles in the library and run a Reading Club every Friday lunchtime. As well as holding regular author visits, competitions and activities, we celebrate World Book Day alongside our annual Reading Week.

Every September new Year 7 students choose and receive a free book through the national ‘Booked Up’ Scheme.

Over the school year students take part in the Oxfordshire Book Award by reading and voting for their favourite books of the year and attend the award ceremony in October.

During the summer term students take part in shadowing the Carnegie Book Award. A national book award. Students read all the short listed titles and attend a day of reviews, presentations discussions and celebrations, known as our Carnegie day!

Resources

The library hosts a huge collection of non-fiction titles including journals, newspapers and magazines as well as a wide variety of books covering a multitude of subjects. Students may search for books or information they want via any school networked computer using the OLIVER library computer system. They are also able to check their own records and renew books this way.

There are 16 computer work stations for students to use either during a class or independently at break or lunch time, or during our after school Study Zone.

Burford School has access to the ‘World Book’ resource, which includes hard copies of the encyclopaedia, kept in the library, and the opportunity to use the online World Book encyclopaedia.

We also have a scanner, colour printer, photocopier as well as three main library areas set up for reading, research and class sessions.
