We hope to develop the full potential of all individual pupils in their study of History and to make their experience interesting, informative and enjoyable.
Key Stage 3
In Year 7 we cover Medieval realms which includes looking at: How did William gain control of England?; Could a king do whatever they liked in the Middle Ages?; ‘All muck and misery’ – was life in the Middle Ages hard?; ‘Rats or rebels?; - which was the more significant?; Why risk death to defend the Church?; Ideas and beliefs – Medieval or Modern?
In Year 8 this is then followed by the Royal Rollercoaster: Would you have signed Charles I’s death warrant?; The Making of the United Kingdom; Would you rather have lived in Tudor or Victorian times?; What did the Industrial Revolution do for us?; the Suffragettes; Why were Europeans mad about Empires and should we be proud of the British Empire?
Finally in Year 9, we cover: What can the Olympic Games tell us about the twentieth century?; Stalin and Hitler – a comparison; How have conflicts affected soldiers and civilians?; Why is the British Empire so controversial?; How swinging were the 60’s?
Key Stage 4
The GCSE course is AQA (4045). The course consists of Unit 1, Unit 2 (together worth 75%) and Controlled Assessment (worth 25%).
In Year 10 we study Unit 1 where we cover The Origins of the First World War; Peacemaking 1918–1919; the League of Nations; Hitler’s foreign policy and the Origins of the Second World War.
In Year 11 we study Unit 2 where we cover the Roaring Twenties USA 1918–1929; Hitler’s Germany and Race Relations in the USA 1955–1968.
An external exam is taken in June of Year 11 based on these topics.
In the Spring Term of Year 11 students do their Controlled Assessment based on Britain At War.
